About the Club
Club Evolve was proudly established at Cessnock Tennis Courts and we want to honour its long history by sharing its story with everyone. Cessnock District Tennis Association has a long history of seventy-five years from 1909 to 1984. Our story however starts a bit later and according to the time capsule of Cessnock courts and Aberdare Tennis and Pastime Club 1920 originally consisted of a tennis association of “young unmarrieds” during a time few means of entertainment were available during those times as they submitted to such routine. Fast forward a few years to when Horace Victor (Hick) Howard, because of his passion had for tennis, had the courts built and in full swing by the beginning of 1923. Originally intended just for family and friends to enjoy as well the social side of it however Hick was a very keen tennis player and anxious to be a part of the competitive scene. He selected a team which he entered in the competition and from that time on our court, “Ingleba”, was the venue, in turn, for many competition matches for many years. Such players as Mrs. Beckett and her daughters Beryl and Enid and other members of the team, “Congewai”, Mrs. Goodwin’s team and many others left their footprints on these courts. Hick and Thelma Howard’s personal vision for the club birthed the Cessnock Tennis Club legacy, these courts have a long history of people who have played at the club, tennis teams that were formed on these very grounds, there have even been many notable Tennis players that had emerged from Cessnock Tennis Courts and certainly many memories that were made right here.
Our mission is to continue it’s legacy, honour its history and keep creating memories.
